The Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory, are located in the South Atlantic, about 400 miles east of the South American mainland and 8000 miles southwest of the UK. With a land mass of around 4700 square miles (two-thirds the size of Wales), the Islands boast stunning natural beauty, teeming wildlife, and a unique lifestyle.
The two main islands, East and West Falkland, along with hundreds of smaller islands, are home to a thriving community. The capital city, Stanley, located on East Falkland, is the world's most southerly capital, with a population of around 2500. Additionally, the British military garrison at Mount Pleasant, 35 miles west of Stanley, houses approximately 1200 military personnel and 400 civilians.
The rest of the population is scattered across the countryside, known locally as "Camp," living in small settlements or on isolated islands. This distribution allows residents to enjoy vast open spaces and an intimate connection with nature. The Falklands are known for their friendly and close-knit community, making it an inviting place for newcomers.
The Falklands' climate is cool and windy, with mild winters and cooler summers compared to the UK. Temperatures range from a maximum of around 25°C in January to a minimum of around -5°C in July or August. The Islands enjoy low rainfall and more sunshine per year than the south of England, providing a pleasant environment for both residents and visitors.
Life in the Falklands
The Falkland Islands offer a unique lifestyle and stimulating career opportunities within a welcoming and vibrant community. With over 50 nationalities represented and around 30 languages spoken, the Islands are a diverse and multicultural society. English is the national language, with Spanish being the most common second language.

Relocating to the Falklands
Relocating to the Falkland Islands is a significant decision that requires careful consideration and research. Here’s what you need to know about the process:
Pre-Employment Checks and Work Permits
Before joining us, you must complete pre-employment checks, including identity, qualifications, criminal record, medical, and dental screenings, to secure a Falkland Islands Work Permit. This rigorous process can take several weeks. Do not give notice to your current employer until your work permit is secured.
Travel and Induction
Once your work permit is secured, we will book your travel and agree on a flight date. Your induction typically starts the first working day after your flight, with colleagues assisting you in settling into Stanley.
Accommodation
Government-supplied rented accommodation is available for overseas contract officers, with rates significantly lower than the private sector. Properties vary in type and may come furnished or unfurnished. A starter pack of basic household goods is provided to help you settle in.
Communications
Telephone numbers in the Falklands are easy to remember with just five digits, and the international dialling code is +500. Internet access is widely available but with modest speeds and capped bandwidth. Mobile coverage is available in Stanley and most countryside settlements.
Banking
The Falkland Islands Pound (FKP), equivalent to the UK Pound Sterling, is the local currency. Most retailers accept US Dollars and Euros. There are no ATMs, but card facilities are widely available. You will need to set up an account with Standard Chartered Bank in Stanley for salary payments.
Shopping and Packing
Stanley has supermarkets and convenience stores with a good selection of imported goods. Local produce, including meat and seasonal vegetables, is available. Practical outdoor clothing is essential, and online shopping is popular for items not readily available locally.
Education
The Falklands offer excellent educational opportunities, with free schooling for children aged 4 to 16. Early years childcare is subsidized by the government. Secondary education includes GCSE qualifications, and the government sponsors permanent residents for further education in the UK.
Healthcare
The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) in Stanley provides comprehensive healthcare services similar to a rural NHS hospital. Most services are free, but some incur fees. Overseas contractors must be medically fit before taking up a post in the Islands.
